I’m often asked why I don’t ask for help when it comes to
My debt. I know
There are grants available that will wipe my debt clean but do you know one of the benefits of having debt? The ability to manage payments on time and consistently.
I recently watched the Harriet Tubman movie starring Cynthia Erivo and what was so special about her story is she made it to the north by herself which was an almost impossible feat. What was even more courageous is that she then went back by herself and created a system of networks that freed more people from slavery.
I have a theory that wealth and comfort creates complacency, granted, I do believe that money has its own stressors, it’s different than those without.
I often quote the proverb, give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Learning how to manage debt is a useful life long skill. It does bring its own stress but stress is inevitable. I don’t believe the idea is to live a stress free life but to learn how to not give stress power or how to negotiate under stress and trust that everything will be ok.
I know that I’m not in this alone, but what I do know is there are people who are out there who don’t have access to grants and the opportunities to financial freedom. If I create a system that can lead me to financial freedom, I can then share it with others. What is also useful is knowing how to recover from debt on my own, cause if someone hands it to me, I don’t learn and I risk repeating the cycle. My time to ask for help is coming but discipline must come first. As Cynthia says in the Harriet soundtrack song , Stand Up, “I go to prepare a place for you.”
