Today I worked with my autistic student and we are achieving some huge mile stones. The more she progresses the more I understand the similarities between being autistic and black.
Now, don’t get me wrong there are definitely some inherent discriminations that neither of us can actually identify with but one thing that rings true for both of us is being brought up in a system that is not designed for you.
I can imagine how she has heard her whole life, you can’t do this because you’re disabled and now, she is doing the very thing people said she couldn’t despite her differences. When a system is created for her specifically, and caters to her needs, she thrives.
